How To Protect Intellectual Property

Posted on

Protecting intellectual property is increasingly important as new technological ideas become more integrated into daily life and therefore are worth more money. Many people don't know exactly how to go about protecting their intellectual property. Follow these tips to make sure that you are able to protect your ideas and use any money spent in that pursuit in the most effective way possible.

1. Don't Go in Blind

If you have a great idea, there's a good chance that someone might have also had that same great idea, or at least something similar. If you go to a patent lawyer or a lawyer that specializes in intellectual property protection, you run the risk that you will pay that lawyer for his or her time only to be told that someone already patented your idea. If you don't want to risk wasting money on this, make sure that you do your research ahead of time. This means going online and searching different patent websites for any ideas that might be similar to yours. Make sure that you boil your idea down to three or four keywords for maximum search effectiveness.

2. Try to Find a Fixed Rate Lawyer

When you know that your idea is definitely unique, or at least not patented, try to find a law firm that will help you with your intellectual property filing for a flat rate. There could be complications with your filing process, but if you find a lawyer that will be willing to assist you for a set amount of money, you won't have to worry about whether or not you'll be able to afford to file your property as the process gets more complicated.

3. Check International Intellectual Property

Finally, once you have your idea, talk to your lawyer about whether or not there are similar patents in other countries. You will need a professional to help you search through these patents. If you hear that someone is developing an idea that is similar to yours, or that there is already a company doing something that is close to what you would like to do, you might want to check to see if these companies have any international patents. International patents will help you protect your intellectual property outside the United States.

For more information, talk to a law firm that help people protect their ideas within the confines of the law. They will be able to guide you through the process.
